PRINCIPLES OF CONTROLLED VOCABULARY AND THESAURUS DESIGN - CALL FOR TRAINERS

The Library of Congress and the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) are seeking trainers for a new training initiative.

BACKGROUND

In November 2000, the Bicentennial Conference on Bibliographic Control for the New Millennium was held to bring together authorities in the cataloging and metadata communities to discuss outstanding issues involving improved discovery and access to Web resources. A resulting recommendation was the development of training and continuing education to improve bibliographic control of selected Web resources. The Cataloger's Learning Workshop (CLW) has been established as a clearinghouse portal for cataloging and metadata training. 'Principles of Controlled Vocabulary and Thesaurus Design' is one of five workshops being developed to support the goal of improving bibliographic control of Web resources. Information about CLW is available.

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

'Principles of Controlled Vocabuary and Thesaurus Design' is a two-day workshop intended to equip the cataloger with the fundamental concepts, rules and best practices in working with controlled vocabularies so that the cataloger may play a role in the use and development of specialized thesauri or controlled vocabularies for different projects. Topics covered include:

A more detailed outline of the workshop is available.

INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR

The objective of the Instructor Development Seminar (IDS) is to develop trainers to deliver 'Principles of Controlled Vocabuary and Thesaurus Design' in a classroom setting. This one-day seminar will prepare participants to deliver the course material and will outline the role of the trainer in the CLW organizational framework.

The IDS for this workshop will be held Thursday September 14th at SOLINET Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. The workshop will be offered on September 12th & 13th, two days prior to the IDS. Interested instructors are encouraged to attend this offering, however a registration discount is not provided. More information about workshop registration is available.

SUPPORT FROM HOME INSTITUTION

The applicant must have the support of the home institution to participate.
Travel expenses to attend the IDS are not reimbursed by CLW. When leading a workshop, instructors will receive travel expenses (and optionally an
honorarium) from the sponsoring organization.

REQUIREMENTSAPPLICATION PROCESS

If you are interested in becoming a trainer for this workshop, please complete the application below and return to Steve Shadle
(shadle@u.washington.edu) by August 11, 2006. Applicants will be notified the following week of their acceptance at the seminar and will be provided with additional details at that time. Late applications will be accepted.

Looks interesting. Hope it comes to Houston.
