The 9th International Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations will be held in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, June 7 - 10, 2006.
Under the general theme Unlocking Scholarly Access: ETDs, Institional Repositories and Creators, ETD 2006 is organized around three sub-themes: open access / open source, intellectual property and institutional repositories and ETDs. Since they began in the 1990's, electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) have been associated with the idea of unlocking access to scholarly publications. One of the goals of the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD), since its inception in 1997, has been "for universities to learn how to unlock the potential of their intellectual property and productions" (http://www.ndltd.org/info/description.en.html). UNESCO, which is mandated by its Constitution to ensure a "free exchange of ideas and knowledge", has strengthened this idea with its project to develop an international framework for the creation of ETDs.ETD2006
