PURLs
It looks like OCLC may be making some changes to the PURL service. The other day I found Big in Japan. It is a toolbox of Web services. Mash-up RSS feeds, RSS to e-mail, podcasting service, and elfURL among aother tools. ElfURL is a service to change a long URL into a shorter one. Much like Tiny URL. ElfURL adds the ability to tag the link. Big in Japan is worth a look. Maybe the folks at OCLC should investigate tagging the PURLs. Would that make it more acceptable to the community?

Persistent Url
There is another PURL service available U-ID. This is a for profit organization. Seems to me the OCLC PURL system would be a better option for libraries. There is the need for these services. I just wonder why the OCLC service has not caught on more widely....
